 Mirrors can do three things for a room: make it appear larger, make it brighter, while adding beauty themselves. They are timeless, striking, and versatile accessories. No matter where you put one, mirrors are an easy way to make a space seem bigger by reflecting light and giving the illusion of depth. For example, putting a large mirror in a small space expands the room and creates the sensation of a larger room. In bathrooms and dressing rooms they are a practical necessity, but mirrors have a variety of uses and can be used throughout the house to beautiful effect.
Placing a mirror over a fireplaces makes the fireplace a striking focal point. A mirror placed there will reflect more light and can do double duty, perhaps by reflecting a beautiful painting or by bringing into the room a beautiful outside view. Reflecting a beautiful piece of art gives the artwork even more importance. In a dining room, a well-placed mirror will double the amount of light by reflecting the chandelier lights and also ambient light from the window(s). The mirror itself, with a striking frame, can become the focal point and can set the decorating tone for the entire room. In a foyer or entry, a mirror is a versatile object. When complemented with art, beautiful objects, or additional lighting such as candles, mirrors have a way of creating a glowing ambience. For example, a large collection of books indicates the owner perhaps spends much of his/her time reading. An abstract painting over an antique piece of furniture may indicate that the person is not formulaic - not everything in the room has to be of one style and match.
Accessories in the home are about living with the things we love - a uniquely personal adventure. What accessories do in a home is personalize and make your home your own, unlike any other. Those objects transcend themselves to become an individual's signature style, a personal atmosphere. Beautiful things well arranged soothes the soul for those living there and for those who visit - a sort of nourishment for the eyes. Are there rules for displaying accessories and objects? Yes and no. Basically, a large object requires its own space. Small objects require company, or groupings so as not to be lost and visually disappear. Also, color, shape, texture, proportion, scale, are all important in displaying objects. Accessories are the "notes of admiration" in a room. It is amazing how a few little touches yield big results. The yard and entrance should be a welcoming site. CLEANLINESS - Above all, a clean and fresh-smelling home is a great way to say hello to the buyer. Remove all pets and their toys and paraphernalia from the premises. PERSONAL TOUCHES - Remove all personal touches. Your home now as become a product and all personal touches are just distractions. Examples are family photos, trophies, ribbons, etc. NEUTRAL COLORS - Keep all walls and floors in a neutral color to appeal to the greatest number of buyers. LIGHT AND MORE LIGHT - Turn on all lights in the house and open all curtains when showing the house. CLUTTER: An open and decluttered home shows the space the best!
