INDULGE IN A HEADBOARD

7/31/2019

Picture
If you need a facelift in your bedroom, there is no need to buy all new furniture.  This bedroom renewal can be far less expensive by simply changing the headboard of the bed.  By doing so, you change the look of and feel of the bedroom, because the bed is the focal point of a bedroom and the headboard is the focal point of the bed.

With that in mind, indulge your standard issue headboard or your old one, to one that is fanciful and exotic.  It will take your bedroom to a totally different level by punching it up several notches, and also bringing romance to your bedroom decor.

MAKING YOUR HALLWAY SPARKLE WITH ART

4/13/2019

The hallway sometimes is the forgotten area in a home and the last place we think of decorating.  We think of hallways as transitional places which we use while moving from one room to the next.

Even if the space is small, we can squeeze style into a narrow hallway by hanging artwork, installing lighting, and adding a runner to the floor.  These three embellishments alone will make the hallway into its own room, which can make it as inviting and
eye catching as any other in the home.

FRAMES:  All of the above can be done at not much expense.  Buying inexpensive frames of different sizes, and painting each a different color for example, can add fun to the art and the space.  If a uniform look is what is wanted, rather than a collection of small art pieces, a trio of large pieces with the same color frames can make as big an impact as a hallway filled with small artwork.  Using uniform frames helps tie together various styles of art as well.

As a focal point, don't forget an end wall is a great place to hang artwork.

SHELVING:  If your hallway is large, shelving can be an option to add books, sculpture(s), paintings or a combination of all three.

LIGHTING:  There is no beauty without light.  Other than the ubiquitous recessed lighting, the choices of lighting the hallway are endless.  From spotlights to pendants, the choice depends on whether the look should be dramatic or whimsical.  In a small hallway, one special pendant light can be striking and act as another object of art in the space.

RUNNER:  Adding a runner into the space is another way of adding warmth, color, and texture.  As long as it is compatible with the wall color and the art, adding a runner can elevate the hallway into a winner.

FABRICS FOR YOUR HOME

We adorn our bodies with fabrics, and we can do the same with our homes.  It is a matter of how we put it all together, reflecting our personality, and how we present ourselves to the world. Fabrics are a core element of interior design, and thus an important part of how a room is furnished.

Fabrics are ubiquitous in a room. From the covers of the sofa and chairs to the window treatments, each element in the room co-exists with all the others in terms of color, pattern, and texture.

Creating a successful room is all about the choice, arrangement, and interplay of prints, patterns, and solids on furniture, pillows and drapery, and how those fabrics mingle with the walls, artwork, carpets and rugs.  The right choice of fabrics can lift a rooms's personality and mood, and emphasize your individuality and identity.  The right combination of these things can be magic in a room.

The appeal of books in any room never fades with any fad, because books give any living space warmth and personality. Organize and style your bookshelves in a multitude of ways, such as by color, stand some upright, stack some horizontally to change the overall outlook of the shelves.  Mix the books with magazines and objects that are meaningful and personal to you.  Books are that appealing, because they are so personal and reflective of your interests.  So read, enjoy, and decorate with those wonderful books!

BACHELOR SMALL APARTMENT LIVING

10/13/2018

The design project for this client presented a few good challenges.  He was moving from a large house he had sold to a small rented two bedroom apartment in Town Center in Annapolis.  The client did't want to bring anything from his previous house with him into the new apartment.  He wanted everything to be new, with some exceptions as his musical instruments and computers.  We at FLAIR INTERIOR DESIGN loved that aspect of things!  We were given carte blanche on the design, but he wanted to approve everything first, and his requirements centered on having an uncluttered and contemporary style.  We also had to work with the paint color already on the walls.  His lease dictated that the wall colors remain as is.

Our solution to the constraint of the wall color was to inject bold colors throughout the apartment from art on the walls, to the bedroom bed cover and throw pillows.  We also brought in basic, clean-lined furniture thoughout the apartment to give that contemporary look he wanted.  Fabrics were chosen to complement the furniture, and Roman shades were tailored to mask an unwanted view.  Since the apartment is an open plan design, every line of sight and viewpoint had to be harmonious.

We at FLAIR INTERIOR DESIGN listened to his wants and needs, and we created a space - a home - for this client that shows off his talent, his interests, and his treasures.  He is happy with the results and so are we.

What a fun accessory a folding screen can be!  It is also one of the most useful and clever accessories in the home.  Whether plain or embellished, a screen can transform an interior.

A folding screen can add drama, and can serve practical functions such as carving a space in an open plan interior.  It can anchor a seating arrangement, provide privacy, divide the living and sleeping area in a small apartment, and add texture and scale to a room. It can also add architectural interest in a room where there is none.  A bare corner can be softened and made interesting, and the proportions of an odd shaped room can be changed.

For centuries designers have used screen tricks such as placing a beautiful screen behind a sofa as an art piece, or placing one behind the bed as a headboard.  They are the portable wall which can be rearranged on a whim, and which can move to any room in the house where allure, pizzaz, and color are needed. And you can take it with you when you move.

When space is at a premium in a very small bedroom, space saving strategy is necessary to maximize every inch.  Think of the bed as the biggest element in the room.  Many manufacturers are making beds with storage drawers under the bed.  They are also making beds with headboards with already built-in nightstands.  Those nightstands are usually off the floor, giving the illusion of more space to the room.

If the room is to be multi-functional, such as a guest room or an office, it is worth  thinking about a Murphy    bed. Murphy beds have come a long way, not only in how they look, but how they perform multiple functions as well. Some come with the addition of drawers, bookshelves, and reading lights, all built-in.

If the room is too small even for nightstands, mounting lamps on the wall on either side of the bed or the headboard is a great solution.  Hanging a couple of lamps or small chandeliers from the ceiling on either side of the bed will work as well.

COLOR:  IT MAKES THE WORLD COME ALIVE!

If you really love color, it makes your heart sing! It brings joy into your life!

Blending unexpected color
combinations can be fun and make your rooms interesting as well as beautiful.
Even the simplest of rooms can take center stage when the colors blend
beautifully.

Don't be afraid to try a color scheme that is a bit different.  Start with a fabric that you love and build from that, or it could be a new rug you'll find or a
beautiful oriental that you already
already possess.

Have fun with experimenting "outside  the box".
