USE WALLPAPER AS AN ACCENT.

Try using an interesting patterned wallpaper to line the backs of your bookshelves.  This is a neat trick if you don't want a full accent wall.  Bookcases are a forgiving place for "do your own" installation, because the handiwork will be somewhat hidden!

Wasting space with a sofa that has arms that are 12 inches wide is not a good thing in a small room.  Swap it out with a sofa with slimmer arms, and you will gain possibly 20 inches or more of seating space.

Don't fixate on overall sofa size, look for the inside seat width instead.

People think you need to use small artwork in a small room, but the opposite is true.  One large piece, or a grouping that reads as a single big piece works best.  It will open up the room to make it feel larger.  

Everyone's instinct is to push furniture up against the walls. Then they wonder why they don't use the room!  It's because the furniture is too far apart for conversation. Pull furniture away from the walls.  Give it a shot.  If it works, its an easy transformation
