RUGS PRIMER - 2   THE BEAUTY AND MAGIC OF ORIENTAL RUGS

1/12/2018

Picture
Our last blog on rugs mentioned the correct size of a rug for a particular sized room.  This blog will speak in general about the beauty and magic or oriental rugs for your home.

The history of oriental rugs is lost in antiquity, but the oldest rugs and fragments of the oldest rugs found through excavations can be seen in museums.  The oldest, the Pazyryk Persian rug, can be seen at the Hermitage Museum in
St. Petersburg, Russia. Through carbon dating, this rug dates to the fourth century B.C.  Another of the oldest rugs, the Ardabil rug, can be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Even in the earliest epochs of history, the use of rugs for interior decoration was common. The magic appeal of oriental rugs, though, has stayed constant throughout history and despite many decorating fads and changes of styles through the centuries to modern times, the oriental rug has the peculiar power to transform a room even more effectively than a painting or other objects.  It fills the space and delights us with color by day and night, cushions our walking, and gives the feeling of warmth. It also brings in the all important element of texture into a room.

The oriental rug in a room is a gift that keeps on giving.  Not only is it a thing of beauty, but it hides a multitude of sins.  It hides dirt and stains effectively because of its intricate patterns and motifs, and if the rug is of good quality, it can last for a very long time and can be passed down through generations.  No matter the design style of your home, from traditional to modern, there is a place for one or more oriental rugs. They are particularly effective in modern/contemporary interiors giving warmth, pattern, and color to what sometimes can be a stark and cold look.

A PRIMMER ON RUGS:  PART 1:  SIZE OF THE RUG FOR YOUR ROOM

11/11/2017

A question often heard by clients of interior designers is "What size rug should I buy for my room?"  Generally, it is the bigger the better.  But obviously you don't want a rug that is so big that it hits the baseboards of the room. A generously sized rug can make a room feel complete and welcoming.
It subdues noise, and it anchors the furniture to the room.  Otherwise, the room can feel as though the furniture is floating, especially with a hard surface floor such as concrete, wood, or vinyl tile.

Too small a rug can make a room feel out of place, smaller and choppy.  On the other hand, you can go almost wall to wall with a rug by leaving just a foot or two of border around the edges of the room.  For example, a 14' x 18' bedroom will be nicely filled by an 11' x 14' rug, which can bring color,
texture, and warmth to the room.

The other way to determine size is to make sure the rug connects to the furniture and the functional area, since the main purpose of the rug is to define a space and give a visual line around all the pieces.  In a large, open space for for example, where the living room connects to the dining room and the kitchen, several rugs could define and connect each living space. A large rug in the living room area could connect all the grouped seating pieces.  Another rug would do the same thing for the dining table and chairs in the dining room.  That way, each grouping area is clearly planted and defined by
each rug as zones of importance.  This technique gives continuity to the whole space and finishes the total look of the open floor space with elegance, beauty, color, pattern, texture and warmth.

DECORATING FOR FALL WITH FLAIR

9/19/2017

The inevitable change to the fall season will be soon upon us.  The changing of the season outside is a perfect reason to change the decor inside.  Our thoughts turn to cozy warm colors, touches of nature, and fun indoor decor, beginning with our from steps and proceeding throughout the home.

There are many ways of bring interest to our front steps, starting with the many colors of lush potted mums. Mums of all colors are plentiful and inexpensive and pared with an artful arrangement of pumpkins and large gourds can make a stunning arrangement for the front steps and porch.  Wreaths are a perfect way to tie fall decor not only for the front door, but also the mantel, walls and more.

Baskets are useful items for fall and can be used in endless ways.  Plain, empty baskets once filled can brighten a corner or under a window. They can be used next to a fireplace, in the kitchen and anywhere to make a fantastic, overflowing cornucopia.

When Halloween comes around, adding just a few bats, spiders, vampires, mummies, ghost or goblins in your yard or inside the house will tie everything together.  There is no need to overdo it.  Simple accents, some imagination to put it all together, add a sophisticated touch to a fall and Halloween decoration or your home.

A QUIET PLACE TO RELAX, READ AND REFLECT

Here is an example of such a place.......a tiny deck off a guest room.  This client removed the guest room's double window and installed a sliding door to the deck.  With a trellis and a flowering vine for privacy, a chair and a small table for coffee or a drink, a little "island" of privacy was created!

Pillows and a small, colorful rug could be added for ambiance.

Try it!  Your overnight guests will enjoy this cozy little place, as well as yourself when you have time for a quiet moment.

MAKE YOUR YARD LOOK AS BEAUTIFUL AT NIGHT AS IT LOOKS DURING THE DAY WITH GOOD LANDSCAPE LIGHTING.

Now that we are swiftly approaching the summer season, most of us want to be outdoors enjoying our decks, patios and our yards and gardens.  It is lovely to enjoy a summer evening in the midst of all of this beauty.  And, the best way to enjoy a summer evening is to have wonderful outdoor lighting that will invite you to come to sit and relax.

There are so many types of lighting, from lighting on metal posts planted low in the ground to guide you on the paths within your garden or lining your walkways to hanging lanterns on your deck or patio or placed on your tables.

There is also fun, interesting lighting, as in the picture here for your pool area!  In addition, you have the option of having a fire pit in your yard or a portable tup-type fireplace placed on your patio to sit around and enjoy.

Spending a summer evening having dinner alfresco with family and friends is one of the great pleasures in life.  And, not to be excluded, is just sitting having refreshments with friends as the evening darkens.

It's time to spruce up your outside areas with inviting, beautiful and relaxing lighting to give you the ambience that you want!

Enjoy your summer evenings!

Continued - UPDATING YOUR HOME:  FROM TRADITIONAL TO TRANSITIONAL

4/22/2017

Picture
When homeowners would like to update from their traditional home, here are a few ways to get the look from traditional to transitional:

PAINT - This is the easiest and cheapest way to update a gloomy room to a more airy and light-flied room.

NEW LIGHT FIXTURES - Less fussy, streamlined light fixtures can make all the difference.  Often, this change can make the most significant difference in the look of a room.  And, it doesn't have to be a hugely expensive item.

NEW CURTAINS - To get a more contemporary look, another item which will make a world of difference is to get rid of the heavy, fussy, dark drapery, swags, frills, and any other extras.  Surround windows with light and minimal drapery such as sheers or linen curtains.

A NEW RUG - large enough to encompass most of the furniture in the room adds a new look and life to the room.  Transitional rugs  sometimes incorporate a fresh look from old patterns, color and scale.

ACCESSORIES - Edit accessories to look more "organized", such as everything of a kind placed together instead of being spread out.
Not every possession needs to be shown either.

All of these simple additions can add a fresh look to a traditional interior which aspires to be a transitional room.

Good luck with updating your interiors!

Please check the very last sentence of the first paragraph.  It should read "The look they are after is the TRANSITIONAL style."

UPDATING YOUR HOME: FROM TRADITIONAL TO TRANSITIONAL

4/14/2017

Picture
For many reasons, many homeowners would like an update from their traditional home, either because they have lived in the house for many years, or are tired of the

"same old, same old".  They, at the same time, do not want to get rid of everything, sometimes for sentimental reasons, but want to have a more up-to-date and "modern" look.
Usually, they don't know where to begin the process of elimination and addition to get the contemporary look they are looking for. The look they are after is the "Traditional Style".

When the transitional style is done right, we at FLAIR INTERIOR DESIGN sometimes hold onto the classic furniture (if it is worth holding onto) and fill in with more contemporary items.  An important idea to remember though - adding a single contemporary or modern item will not give you the look.  Here are a few ways to get the look from traditional to transitional.

Stay tuned!!  Our next blog will list the ways to get the look you want!

FUNCTIONALITY: SWIVEL CHAIRS

2/26/2017

The beauty and functionality of the swivel chair is its ability to move and to spin 360 degrees.  People like the idea of being able to turn toward a view, to the TV, or to a conversation.  With that in mind, the swivel chair can fit into any decor from modern to traditional and into any space in the home.  It works great in the kitchen at the counter as well.

Swivel chairs also fit beautifully in the living room or the great room and work wonderfully around the fireplace.  Some of these chairs not only swivel but rock as well, making a great addition to a baby's room.  The swivel chair in the office is invaluable, especially those with wheels on the legs, making it possible to scoot from the printer to the computer or any other area in the space.

The versatility of these chairs is unbeatable, since they come in so many different textures and fabrics.  From rattan, wood, leather, silk, or velvet and anything in between, you can pivot your way to a better expansive view of your space with a swivel chair.
