THE IMPORTANCE OF AN INITIAL CONSULTATION

Here are the steps that take place in one of our consultations.

After the client contacts an interior designer, the designer will schedule an initial consultation, which may last one or two hours.  The consultation is important.

First of all the client and the designer get to know each other.  After a walk-through of the space, they discuss in detail the specific requirements for the project.  The client details the problems areas and thoughts regarding solutions, and his/her vision for the space.  The designer in turn offers suggestions about the client's goals and how to reach them.

The designer asks the client questions to help understand their tastes and preferences, taking cues from what is already in the home, and actively listening to the client's wishes. They discuss lifestyle, how the space will be used, what are the client's favorite colors, and the client's dislikes specifically and in general.  The designer wants the end product to be a total reflection of the client's tastes and special interests.

It is important to discuss the budget, and whether the client wants to accomplish the project all at once or in stages over time.

A consultation provides the client the opportunity to get accurate, realistic information regarding costs and the time required, and helps find more cost-efficient ways to reach the client's goals.  The initial consultation becomes a valuable tool for both the designer and the client.

Below are "before" and "after" pictures of one of our interior design projects.  This particular project involved very radical changes, as you can see.  Our projects range from small changes to more complex changes and improvements, all with the goal of providing a beautiful and livable space for the client.  All of our projects have their individual flavor that reflects the client's needs, desires and personality.

Initial consultation is really important. I’ve been in the same profession for almost a decade. I’ve seen different views, budget, and timeframe. Many things have changed like materials, technology, and methodology. But what I’ve learned is that client tends to act as if they knew more than any professional designer does. I’ve observed some clients are fishing over your concept and once they’ve had your idea, you’re done. They’ll have workers to do the job and next thing you know, your design idea was constructed beyond professional fees. It’s a sad and sick reality of today’s architectural business and everything related to it.
